Coach Bosma spoke to us this week about Goodness. I took notes, but these were his words.
We say something is ‘good’ quite often in our language. Generally when we speak of something being good, we mean ‘OK’. If someone asked us about a movie we saw we might say ‘good’ if it was OK, or terrific or great or awesome if we really enjoyed it.
But Biblical goodness is not an adjective to describe our feelings towards something. But rather it’s a noun. It’s the very opposite of evil. If we think of pure evil on one end of a spectrum, pure goodness is the farthest end of that spectrum. That pure Goodness is the very nature of our Good and Faithful Father. A righteous, virtuous, holy goodness.
Due to our sinful nature, and because of The Fall, we are not ever Good. Not in the same way that God is good. But we have the potential to be good. That potential is unlocked through the Holy Spirit, and requires us to be a follower of Christ. For it is in our capacity to show goodness that we can bring honor to the one that enables us. He is our motivation to do and be Good.
